Guwahati: The NTPC thermal power plant in Salakati has come under intense scrutiny as local residents express growing concerns over its environmental impact. Farmers from approximately 15 surrounding villages are reporting severe consequences from chemical waste being discharged through the plant’s pipelines, which they say is polluting local water sources and causing significant damage to agriculture and livestock.Reports indicate that the contamination has led to mass fish deaths in local ponds, the destruction of crops, and illnesses among animals that ingested the tainted water. “The situation is critical,” said one farmer, who shared the devastating losses to both their farm produce and livestock, which are vital to their livelihoods.In response, the affected villagers have organized protests, demanding immediate action from NTPC to address the pollution and protect their health and environment.
