The inaugural Guwahati Asian Film Festival (GAFF) in February 2025 will open with Iran’s Oscar entry, In the Arms of the Tree, alongside a diverse lineup of films from across Asia and India.

Guwahati:The inaugural Guwahati Asian Film Festival (GAFF) 2025, scheduled for February 7-9, will open with the critically acclaimed Iranian film In the Arms of the Tree, directed by Babak Khajehpasha. This film, which represents Iran’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards, is set to kick off three days of exceptional cinema showcasing diverse narratives from across Asia.Festival organizers revealed that the film, which tells a poignant story of family struggle and resilience, transcends cultural boundaries to offer a deeply emotional experience. This opening feature sets the tone for the festival’s celebration of Asian filmmaking.GAFF 2025 promises to be a groundbreaking event, featuring an impressive selection of films from countries such as Turkey, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, China, and Iran. In addition to the international lineup, the festival will spotlight Indian cinema with a dedicated Indian Showcase Section and celebrate the emerging cinematic voices from North East India through a special competition segment.Festival Director Monita Borgohain expressed that GAFF is not only about films but also about fostering cultural connections and new dialogues. She emphasized that the festival will provide a vibrant platform for filmmakers and cinephiles to explore diverse narratives.The festival will also feature a series of screenings, panel discussions, and networking events, creating an engaging space for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike. The festival’s Advisory Board includes renowned figures such as film critic Srinivasa Santhanam, National Award-winning filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, and film critic Dalton Christopher.The first edition of GAFF marks an important milestone in recognizing and celebrating both Asian and North-East Indian cinema.
