Dr. Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, an MLA from Assam, strongly opposes the “One Nation, One Election” plan, labeling it “unnecessary” and warning it could disrupt democracy and federalism.
Guwahati: Dr. Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Assam and General Secretary of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has strongly criticized the government’s “One Nation, One Election” proposal, terming it both “unnecessary” and “unrealistic.” Speaking out against the initiative, Dr. Islam expressed skepticism about its feasibility, stating, “This plan is not required and implementing it is virtually impossible. Even if the law is passed, executing it will be highly challenging.”He further raised concerns that such a policy could damage the democratic process and undermine the country’s federal structure. According to him, implementing simultaneous elections could compromise the integrity of free and fair elections. “This would be an assault on the federal framework of India,” he remarked.Dr. Islam also compared the potential fallout of the proposal to the controversial demonetization initiative, warning it could lead to major disruptions and negative outcomes for the nation. “It would be a huge failure, much like demonetization,” he said. The “One Nation, One Election” proposal, which aims to synchronize the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, has sparked a heated debate across the political landscape. While proponents argue it would streamline elections and reduce associated costs, critics, like Dr. Islam, question its practicality and potential threat to the country’s democratic values and federal system. As the discussion continues, many political leaders, particularly from states like Assam, are raising concerns that the proposal may not align with India’s diverse political and governance structure.
