Guwahati: A devastating incident occurred at St. Alphonsa School in Model Village, Naharlagun, when a water tank exploded, resulting in the deaths of three students and leaving two others critically injured. The tragedy unfolded during school hours while the students were playing on the campus. The force of the explosion also caused a nearby wall to collapse, which led to fatal injuries for the victims.Despite swift action from emergency services, who rushed the injured students to Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), three Class 9 students succumbed to their injuries. The remaining two students are in critical condition and are receiving intensive medical care.Local authorities, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rishi Longdo, have confirmed the incident, stating that it appears to be a case of negligence by the school management. Following the explosion, six school staff members—including the principal and the warden—were arrested in connection with the incident.The school has been sealed off, and a heavy police presence is ensuring public order, with protests from concerned parents and residents anticipated. Investigations into the cause of the water tank’s collapse are underway, with the authorities promising to hold those responsible accountable for the tragedy.
