Congress leader Mridul Islam, who died during the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest in Guwahati, was laid to rest in Boko. Party leaders call for a judicial inquiry into the incident and criticize police actions.
Guwahati: Congress leader Mridul Islam, who tragically lost his life during the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest in Guwahati, was laid to rest on Thursday in his native village of Boko, Kamrup district. The funeral was attended by family, supporters, and senior Congress leaders, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah, AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan, APCC Working President Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed. The death of Islam has sparked widespread grief and calls for accountability, particularly regarding the police’s response to the protest. The demonstration, which aimed to address pressing issues in Assam, descended into chaos after police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. At the burial, Bhupen Borah demanded a judicial inquiry into Islam’s death and condemned the police’s use of force. He also warned of further protests at Janata Bhawan if the government does not take appropriate action. The controversy surrounding the incident has intensified due to conflicting reports. Guwahati’s Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah, claimed the Congress had not sought permission for the march, and that protesters breached barricades before tear gas was used. Regarding Islam’s death, Barah suggested that he fell ill after drinking water in his vehicle—a statement strongly refuted by Congress leaders.
