Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah and other senior leaders, including Ripun Bora, were arrested during protests in Guwahati demanding justice for Congress worker Mridul Islam’s death. The protests stem from tensions over the Raj Bhavan incident on December 18.

Guwahati: Bhupen Borah, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, was detained by the Guwahati police on Friday, December 20, at Hatigaon Point, while taking part in ongoing protests demanding justice for Congress worker Mridul Islam. Mridul was killed during a demonstration outside the Raj Bhavan on December 18.Alongside Borah, senior Congress leaders such as Ripun Bora, Uday Bhanu Chib, and Ratul Kalita were also arrested and are being held at the 10th APBn camp in Kahilipara, Guwahati.The protests followed the tragic death of Mridul Islam during the December 18 Raj Bhavan rally. Following the incident, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a police investigation.Earlier in the day, heavy police presence was seen around key locations, including the Assam Secretariat and Congress office in the Rajdhani Masjid area, where many party workers had gathered to continue the protests. Tensions escalated as protesters clashed with police, attempting to march despite barricades.In response to the unrest from the Raj Bhavan Cholo protest, which raised concerns over issues like smart meters, the Adani controversy, and the Manipur situation, the Guwahati police filed a suo-moto case.
