Guwahati: The Guwahati City Police have filed a suo-moto case in response to the disturbances caused by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee’s Raj Bhavan Cholo protest on December 18. The protest, which highlighted issues such as smart meters, the Adani controversy, and the situation in Manipur, escalated into a confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement.According to Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah, the case was registered due to law and order concerns arising from the rally. Protesters reportedly attempted to dismantle police barricades, which heightened tensions in the area.On December 19, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced new regulations on protests in Guwahati. In a press briefing, he stated that protests near Raj Bhawan would be banned, and participants would be directed to designated protest zones. Sarma also addressed the December 18 incident, confirming that an investigation would be initiated into the actions of those who attempted to breach barricades. He assured that the city police would look into the matter thoroughly.
