Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces extended road safety measures, including crackdowns on drunk driving and infrastructure upgrades, to reduce accidents ahead of the Magh Bihu celebrations.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a recent review meeting on road safety, attributed the state’s success in reducing road accidents to a tough stance on drunk driving. He highlighted the significant impact of strict enforcement of the “No Drink and Drive” rule and increased checks after 10 PM in Guwahati, which have played a pivotal role in improving road safety.To maintain this progress, CM Sarma announced that these enhanced road safety measures would continue through the Magh Bihu festivities. The Excise Department has been tasked with assessing flexible timings for bars to better control late-night activities.Recognizing the growing number of road accidents in certain areas, the government is accelerating the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also adding advanced safety measures like speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage to road projects.In addition, district police chiefs have been ordered to equip commercial vehicles with reflective patches for better visibility at night. Police and district authorities will also launch widespread road safety campaigns on social media to raise awareness among the public.As part of a comprehensive approach, a vision screening initiative for commercial drivers is being rolled out. Those identified with vision impairments will receive corrective measures to ensure safer driving conditions.
