The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) dismantles a wildlife hunting ring in Chirang’s Baikhungaon village, arresting three individuals involved in the poaching of civets and birds.
Guwahati: In a decisive operation, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) busted an illegal wildlife hunting ring in the Baikhungaon village of Chirang district. The authorities acted on a tip-off about poaching activities involving wild civets and birds, which were exposed after one of the suspects, Dipankar Basumatary, shared photos of the hunts on his WhatsApp status.The police team, led by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kajalgaon Police Station, launched a swift search operation. They arrested Dipankar Basumatary, a resident of Baikhungaon, who admitted to his involvement in the illegal hunting and confirmed that he had posted the hunting images on December 12 and 25, 2024.Dipankar further revealed that two other villagers, Bilipang Basumatary and Swmdwm Basumatary, were also part of the illegal activities. Following this, both individuals were apprehended. During questioning, the duo disclosed the location of the weapons used for hunting, leading to the discovery of an air gun and ammunition at Swmdwm’s residence.The authorities have registered a case under multiple sections, including the Biological Diversity Act, Wildlife Protection Act, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
