Himanta Biswa Sarma slammed the Congress party for mishandling the final journey of Dr. Manmohan Singh, claiming he deserved more respect both in life and death. He also drew comparisons to the treatment of other Congress veterans.
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ignited controversy with his comments about the funeral arrangements for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, accusing the Congress party of failing to honor the statesman properly in his final journey. Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter), asserting that Dr. Singh, renowned for his intellect and dignity, “deserved much better” both during his lifetime and in his passing. His criticism comes in the wake of ongoing discussions regarding plans for a memorial to Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26 at AIIMS Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised to establish a memorial, although the specifics are yet to be finalized. In his remarks, Sarma compared this situation to previous instances where the Congress party reportedly disregarded other prominent figures, such as former Prime Ministers Narasimha Rao and Pranab Mukherjee. He also recalled the strained relationship between Rahul Gandhi and Dr. Singh, citing past incidents, including the infamous gestures that undermined Singh’s reputation.Sarma emphasized that Dr. Singh’s legacy should not be tarnished by political gamesmanship. “At the very least, we should honor his memory with the respect and dignity he deserves, free from any discord within the Congress leadership,” Sarma stated. Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, is celebrated for spearheading India’s economic reforms and liberalization.
