Assam Chief Minister Reports Reclamation of Over 74,000 Bighas of Encroached Forest Land

In a significant achievement against illegal encroachments, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announces the recovery of 74,115 bighas of forest land over the past three years, aiming to restore ecological balance and bolster economic growth in the state.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on January 2 that the state has successfully reclaimed approximately 74,115 bighas of forest land that had been illegally occupied over the past three years. This land has now been returned to the state’s forest department, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to combat encroachment.During his address, CM Sarma elaborated on the restoration of environmental integrity, revealing that 9,000 hectares of forest area have been designated as protected forest land in addition to the reclaimed territories. Previously, the Assam government unveiled the ‘Advantage Assam’ conclave, set to commence in February. This initiative aims to foster a supportive ecosystem for innovation, enhance access to funding, and eliminate bureaucratic barriers, thereby encouraging business development in the region. The conclave is anticipated to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. CM Sarma reiterated his administration’s dedication to unlocking the state’s potential through various transformative initiatives focused on promoting inclusive and sustainable growth.
