Guwahati: On the morning of January 3, parts of Assam and several northeastern states experienced tremors from a moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located in Myanmar. The seismic event occurred at 10:02 a.m., with the NCS reporting its coordinates at Latitude 24.92 N and Longitude 94.97 E. The earthquake struck at a depth of 127 kilometers, minimizing its surface-level impact. While the tremors were reported across multiple northeastern states, official confirmation from the NCS regarding the extent of the affected areas is awaited. So far, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage. This recent earthquake comes a day after a smaller seismic event in the region. On January 2, an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was recorded in western and southwestern Sikkim. While the tremors in Sikkim caused minor disturbances, no significant damage or injuries were reported.Northeast India lies within a seismically active zone, making the region prone to frequent earthquakes due to the tectonic activity in the Himalayan and Indo-Myanmar ranges. Residents are regularly reminded to stay alert and prepared for such natural occurrences. The absence of immediate reports of damage or injuries from the January 3 earthquake has provided relief to local authorities and residents. However, the event underscores the importance of continued vigilance and robust infrastructure to mitigate potential risks in this earthquake-prone region.
