Tensions eased at the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Unakoti district after a violent encounter between BSF personnel and suspected smugglers. Emergency flag meetings between BSF and BGB officials helped restore peace.
Guwahatii: Border tensions erupted in Maguruli village, Unakoti district, Tripura, following a violent altercation between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and suspected smugglers from Bangladesh. The clash began last Monday when BSF troops intercepted an attempt to smuggle sugar near border pillar 47.During the chase, two BSF personnel unintentionally crossed into Bangladeshi territory. They reportedly fired blank shots with a Pump Action Gun to deter the smugglers, who had begun pelting stones at them, according to a security source. The situation worsened when smugglers allegedly rallied local villagers and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) forces. The mob reportedly tried to seize the BSF soldiers’ rifles, attacked them with sharp weapons, and attempted physical assault. While video footage of the incident circulated widely on social media, BSF officials did not provide a statement when contacted by media. The escalating tension was resolved on Tuesday after emergency flag meetings between BSF and BGB commanders at Maguruli. These talks successfully restored calm along the sensitive border stretch, which falls under the jurisdiction of Maguruli Gram Panchayat in Kailashahar.
