Ongoing rescue operations at Umrangso coal mine tragedy face challenges due to rising water levels. Sonar equipment aids search as Indian Navy, NDRF, and Army continue efforts to locate trapped workers.
Guwahati: The rescue operation at the coal mine in Umrangso, Assam, continues to be a race against time as water levels rise, hindering progress despite the use of heavy pumps. Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, the team commander of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), confirmed that sonar equipment is being deployed to aid the search. However, the water level remains stubbornly high due to continuous inflow, complicating efforts to locate the missing miners.“We have thoroughly searched the vertical areas but have not found anything yet,” Singh explained. “We are working to pump out water from the mine, but the water level has only increased instead of decreasing. This is a coordinated operation involving the Indian Navy, NDRF, and Indian Army.”The joint rescue mission, underway since January 6, seeks to rescue eight trapped miners. The operation includes multiple agencies, such as the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Assam Rifles, alongside the Navy and NDRF. Tragically, one body has already been recovered, leaving the fate of the others uncertain.According to Singh, sonar technology, which uses sound waves to detect objects underwater, has been employed to improve the efficiency of the search. “The Indian Navy, Army, and NDRF
