Guwahati: The historic three-day Jonbeel Mela, known for its celebration of cultural unity and age-old traditions, commenced today at Jagiroad, Assam. Set against the picturesque Jonbeel landscape, the event draws participants and visitors from across the region.The inaugural ceremony featured rituals and prayers at the Charibhai Deosal Shiva Temple, led by Gobha Deoraj and royal dignitaries, marking the start of this centuries-old cultural exchange between hill and plain communities.The first day sees the arrival of hill community representatives, known as “Mama-Mami,” who will engage in a traditional barter system with the plainspeople on the second day—reviving an ancient trade practice. Community fishing and traditional cockfights will also add vibrancy to the festivities.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to grace the mela on January 16, where he will present royal honorariums to 22 Tiwa kings, highlighting the state government’s dedication to preserving Assam’s rich cultural legacy.Jonbeel Mela continues to serve as a vibrant symbol of communal harmony, historical significance, and the enduring spirit of Assam’s diverse cultural tapestry.
