Guwahati: The historic Jonbeel Mela in Morigaon district came alive on its second day with the revival of its famed traditional barter system. Ramakant Deori, the MLA representing Morigaon, officially inaugurated the cultural practice with a ceremonial exchange known as Pahar Bhaiyyam from Dokmokali, symbolizing messages of peace and unity.This age-old custom saw farmers and traders from various indigenous tribes, including the Tiwa, Karbi, Khasi, and Jaintia communities, gathering to trade essential items like rice, vegetables, dried fish, and medicinal herbs—all without using currency. The barter exchange reflected the enduring spirit of cooperation and interdependence that has defined the mela for generations.During his address, MLA Deori underscored the importance of safeguarding such indigenous traditions amid modern advancements. He noted that the barter system not only sustains economic ties but also strengthens social and cultural connections between diverse communities.The day’s festivities included vibrant folk performances, displays of traditional attire, and bustling markets. The ritual of Pahar Bhaiyyam, representing unity and peace, resonated with participants, reinforcing the mela’s foundational themes of harmony, cultural pride, and communal brotherhood.The Jonbeel Mela continues to serve as a living testament to Assam’s rich cultural heritage, drawing people together in a celebration of shared traditions and timeless values.
