BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary calls for March-April Bodoland Territorial Council elections, citing fiscal concerns and criticizing Pramod Boro’s governance. Political activity intensifies ahead of BTC elections.
Guwahati: Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) President and former Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary has called for BTC elections to be held in March or April, coinciding with the end of the financial year. He argued that this timeline would align with legal and fiscal management requirements under the current administration led by Pramod Boro.Speaking to the media, Mohilary opposed Boro’s preference for December elections, stating that an early vote would allow the administration to access a six-month financial allocation, which he claimed violates established financial norms. He also accused Boro of neglecting the interests of specific communities during his tenure as Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief. The current BTC government’s term, led by Pramod Boro, is expected to end in April 2024, matching the budgetary cycle. Political parties, including the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the opposition BPF, are ramping up their preparations for the upcoming elections. In a boost for BPF, 27 members from the Ex-National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Ex-NDFB), All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), and the UPPL youth wing recently joined the party at Bishmuri. Additionally, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Prabin Boro and Congress leader Deepjyoti Saharia officially switched allegiance to the BPF on January 16 during a meeting at Bathou Kherai Resort in Chirang, with Mohilary in attendance. As political activity intensifies, the BTC elections are expected to be a decisive event, potentially reshaping the political landscape of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
