Guwahati: Vanlallawmzuala Varte, an environmental advocate from Mizoram, has earned a place in the India Book of Records for his monumental 17,000-km bicycle journey titled “Ride to Clean Air.” The 34-year-old cyclist from Aizawl’s Mission Veng locality set records for the shortest time to traverse all states and union territories on a bicycle to promote air pollution awareness and for achieving the highest elevation gained for the same cause.Starting his journey on January 25, 2024, Varte completed the expedition in 283 days, navigating through India’s diverse landscapes, including Umling La—the world’s highest motorable road. Facing varying weather conditions, he delivered a powerful message on the need for environmental stewardship and a sustainable future.Varte’s efforts were met with widespread appreciation as he was honored in each state and union territory he visited. His campaign included engaging speeches at schools, tree-planting initiatives, and active collaborations with local Pollution Control Boards. The journey was significantly bolstered by a supportive WhatsApp group named “All India Tour Ride to Clean Air,” which united Mizo communities across India. Members provided vital assistance, from mechanical repairs to logistical help, while offering continuous moral support through challenging moments.Despite balancing personal commitments—having married in November 2023—Varte remains passionate about environmental activism. He leads the Mission Veng Youth Adventure Club, holds leadership roles in the Mizoram Cycling Association (MiCA), and serves on the executive committee of the Mission Veng Branch YMA. Additionally, he dedicates his time to teaching Sunday school at his local Presbyterian Church, exemplifying his commitment to both community service and environmental causes.
