Guwahati: The administration in Margherita, Assam, has intensified its crackdown on illegal rat-hole coal mining, with law enforcement sealing multiple unauthorized mines across regions such as Ledo, Tirap, Tikak, and Namdang.Under the directives of Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), G.P. Singh, authorities were instructed to eliminate all illegal mining activities in Margherita, Ledo, and Lekhapani within a seven-day timeframe. The strong stance taken by law enforcement has reportedly left coal mafias in disarray.In response to orders from the Tinsukia district administration, four task forces have been mobilized to tackle the issue. These teams have been conducting raids in various locations, dismantling illegal mining operations and associated infrastructure.Despite intensified efforts, illegal mining activities persisted in Namdang as recently as January 21, just days after an official raid on January 18.Pronamika Konwar, Executive Magistrate of Margherita Co-District Administration, expressed the administration’s resolve, stating, “We have deployed four teams comprising police, civil officials, and representatives from Coal India to eradicate illegal rat-hole mining in the region. So far, we have successfully dismantled mines and camps following official orders.”The administration remains firm in its mission to end the environmentally harmful and illegal mining practices plaguing the area.
