Guwahati In a recent development in Assam, six individuals have been arrested for their involvement in the public slaughter of cattle during a picnic, following the viral spread of a controversial video. The video, which surfaced on social media, depicted the act taking place in a public area, igniting outrage, especially among Hindu communities, who hold cows in high religious regard.Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh confirmed the arrests and posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Following the viral video of cattle slaughter in a public space, six individuals have been arrested, and further legal action is underway,” tagging @GuwahatiPol, @assampolice, and @CMOfficeAssam.The video was initially shared by users with accounts such as @razz_1065 and @its_me___enjamul, drawing significant backlash for what many perceived as a deliberate act to provoke religious sentiments. The incident prompted a formal complaint to the Hatigaon Police Station, which led to the arrest of the suspects.The arrested individuals, all residents of Aslapara in Kamrup district’s Chhaygaon area, have been identified as:Sahil Khan,Hafizur Islam,Rakibul Hussain,Zahidul Islam,Ijaz Khan.The accused are now being transported to the Hatigaon Police Station for further questioning.The incident has reignited discussions on the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which bans the illegal slaughter and trade of cattle in the state.
