JD(U) withdraws support from the BJP-led Manipur government, with its sole MLA Md. Abdul Nasir moving to the opposition bench following the party’s alignment with the INDIA alliance.

Imphal: Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has officially terminated its alliance with the BJP-led government in Manipur, signaling a key political shift in the state. This decision results in Md. Abdul Nasir, the party’s only MLA, moving to the opposition bench in the state assembly. The JD(U) issued an official letter to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, explaining that although the party had six elected members in the 2022 State Assembly elections, five of them defected to the BJP soon after. The defection issue is currently under review by the Speaker’s Tribunal as per the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.Additionally, JD(U) highlighted its alignment with the INDIA coalition—an opposition party alliance—as the main reason for withdrawing support from the BJP government. The party informed the Governor, Chief Minister, and Speaker of this decision, with Md. Abdul Nasir now being seated with the opposition in the latest Assembly session.
