Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal announces the launch of a new helpline on February 15 to address medicine shortages in government hospitals and streamline drug distribution.
Guwahati: In an effort to resolve the ongoing issue of medicine shortages in government hospitals, Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal has unveiled a new helpline, set to go live on February 15. This initiative aims to facilitate better access to prescribed medications for patients and address complaints regarding discrepancies in drug distribution.During a recent visit to Sribhumi Civil Hospital, Minister Singhal spoke directly with patients about their experiences with medicine availability. One patient shared concerns about receiving only a partial supply of prescribed medications. After reviewing the situation and consulting with hospital staff, it was revealed that complications arose due to changes in the prescribed medicine names by doctors, which hampered the distribution process. To address this, the state government will introduce a WhatsApp-based complaint system. This system will allow patients who are unable to obtain prescribed medicines to report their concerns directly, particularly if they are forced to buy them independently. The government has also pledged to take strict action against any medical professional found altering prescriptions without valid reasons, ensuring that patient care remains unaffected.Minister Singhal made the official announcement after inspecting hospital facilities and convening a meeting at the District Commissioner’s office, alongside Minister Krishnendu Paul of the Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Department. The government has committed to resolving the issue by March, ensuring a more efficient and transparent healthcare system for the people of Assam.
