Surajit Moran, a surrendered ULFA cadre, has been arrested by security forces in Tinsukia for allegedly extorting money from local businesses using the insurgent group’s name.
Guwahati:Surajit Moran, also known as Koliya, a surrendered member of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), has been arrested by security forces in Tinsukia district on charges of extortion. Moran is accused of demanding money from local businessmen under the threat of invoking the name of the banned insurgent group.The arrest came after security forces acted on reliable intelligence, capturing Moran, who has since been placed in judicial custody by Pengeree police. Reports indicate that Moran had been extorting money from various traders, including a tea businessman in Nalani, Pengeree, about a month ago.Following a complaint by the tea trader, police had previously arrested Mintu Moran, another suspect, from Kakopathar on December 2 last year. Further investigation into the case revealed Surajit Moran’s involvement in the extortion racket, leading to his apprehension.Authorities continue to investigate the case to identify any additional members or links in the extortion network.
