Gyanendra Pratap Singh, an experienced IPS officer, has been appointed as the Director General of the CRPF, bringing years of expertise in counter-insurgency and national security.
Guwahati: Gyanendra Pratap Singh, a senior officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS), has officially assumed the position of Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Singh, a 1991 batch officer, took charge on January 30, 2025, succeeding the officiating chief, Special Director General Vitul Kumar, at the CRPF headquarters.His appointment was confirmed by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on January 18, 2025, and his tenure will extend until his retirement on November 30, 2027. Prior to this, Singh served as the Director General of Assam Police, where he played a crucial role in counter-insurgency operations and reforms within law enforcement.In his new role as the head of India’s largest paramilitary force, Singh will oversee critical CRPF operations, including counter-terrorism, internal security, and law enforcement in areas facing conflict. His leadership arrives at a time when the CRPF continues to be a pivotal force in maintaining national security.Born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on November 8, 1967, Singh completed his education in Lucknow before joining the IPS in 1992. He started his career in Assam, serving in districts affected by insurgency. His work as Superintendent of Police in Jorhat, where he led counter-insurgency operations without Army support, earned him recognition.Singh’s career also includes significant roles in the Special Protection Group (SPG), providing security for Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh, and in the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he investigated major terrorist attacks. He later served in various high-ranking positions in Assam Police, including Additional Director General for Law and Order, before becoming the state’s Director General of Police in 2023.Singh’s vast experience in counter-insurgency and national security is expected to guide the CRPF in addressing future security challenges.
