After being closed throughout the monsoon season, the Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) in Assam’s Darrang district reopened to visitors on Saturday.
Rumul Boro, a senior member of the park’s frontline forest staff, officially opened the park during a brief ceremony that was held at the park’s main entrance in Silbori.
The park had been closed since March this year.
In the function, former honorary wildlife warden Bhargab Kumar Das and social activist Dilip Nath released a colourful brochure published by the forest department.
It should be noted that more riverine areas will be converted into forest areas following the recent expansion of the national park from its current area of 78.82 square kilometers to 200.32 square kilometers in order to create a 180-km-long animal corridor connecting Orang National Park with Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Sonitpur district and Kaziranga National Park.
A total of 128 one-horned rhinos were counted in the Park at the most recent census, while 28 Royal Bengal Tigers were thought to be living there.
