Uttarakhand Avalanche: Assam native mountaineer Deepshikha Hazarika’s body recovered

Guwahati: The body of Assam-based mountaineer Deepshikha Hazarika, who went missing in the Uttarakhand avalanche has been recovered on Saturday.

The Hazarika went missing from Mount Draupadi Ka Danda-II in Uttarakhand after an avalanche struck the mountain since October 4.

Deepshikha, a resident of the Rajgarh area in Guwahati, was missing along with nine other fellow climbers for the past three days.

Meanwhile, Deepshikha’s father and brother have reached Uttarakhand to bring back the body. However, her body will be brought back to Assam after the postmortem.

As per the rescue bulletin issued by the NIM, ten bodies were recovered today taking the death toll to 26.

An Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) of the Indian Air Force (IAF) brought seven bodies of mountaineers trapped in the avalanche to Matli.

The avalanche occurred at a height of 17,000 feet on October 4 when a total of 29 people were returning after summiting Draupadi Ka Danda II peak. The team of climbers from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi went missing after getting trapped in an avalanche on their way back.

Despite weather conditions hindering the rescue operation, the search is on for three more people who are still missing.
