The Constituition Day in India is celebrated in November 26 also known as Samvidhan Diwas or National Law Day. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India which later came into effect on January 26, 1950.
Constitution Day aims to create awareness about the importance of the Constitution and Dr B R Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constituition. B R Ambedkar, chairman of the drafting committee, is considered to be the chief architect of the Constitution of India. The Constitution of India was drafted by the members of the Constituent Assembly.
The Constitution of India is a set of written principles and precedents of the Government of India. It frames fundamental political principles, procedures, rights, directive principles, restrictions and duties of the government and the citizens of the country. The Preamable of the Constitution of India declares the country as a sovereign, secular, socialist and democratic republic. It assures its citizens equality, liberty and justice for all citizens and promote fraternity to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation.
History of Indian Constituition
Dr Ambedkar completed the draft of the Indian Constitution and presented it in the Constituent Assembly on 1948. It was on November 26, 1949, that this draft was adopted with very few amendments. The Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, which is being observed as Republic Day. During this two-month break, the members of the constituent assembly thoroughly read it in order to find any mistakes.
The Constituent Assembly met for two years, eleven months and eighteen days, a total of 166 days, before adopting the Constitution. Initially, it had been written in both English and Hindi and had been signed by each member of the assembly.

- The Indian Constitution is the world’s largest written constitution in the world with 1,17,360 words (in the English version).
- The original copy had been written by hand.
- Each page of the constitution has a gold leaf frame while the opening page of each is adorned with some kind of artwork.
- Beohar Rammanohar Sinha and Nandalal Bose, who were artists from Shantiniketan, had decorated the original version of the Constitution.
- Prem Behari Narain Raizada was a talented calligrapher who had prepared the original copies of the constitution.
