New Delhi: The Supreme Court today granted bail to a life convict in the Godhra Sabarmati Express fire case. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha on Thursday directed the trial court to grant conditional bail to Faruque, a life convict in the Godhra case. Farooq, who has been serving a life sentence in jail for 17 years, had sought his release on bail considering the situation.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Gujarat government, was hearing the case. “There is no need to release those involved in heinous crimes like burning 59 people, including women and children,” he said, opposing the convict’s plea for bail. He claimed that the culprits of the incident had locked the door of the S-6 compartment of the Sabarmati Express from outside and set it on fire with the intention of murder.
