‘Chillai Kalan’! Cold wave hits Kashmir

Srinagar:The Kashmir Valley has been covered with white snow cover. Because now ‘Chillai Kalan’ has started in the valley. What does ‘Chillai Kalan’ mean? In fact, the cold wave going on from start to finish in Kashmir is called ‘Chillai Kalan’.

‘Chillai Kalan’ will cause a lot of snowfall in the Valley in Kashmir this afternoon. Every year from the third week of December winter takes an aggressive form in Kashmir. So every year from December 21, winter breaks down in the valley and permanent residents of Kashmir have been calling such an environment ‘Chillai Kalan’.

‘Chillai Kalan’ continues in Kashmir for 40 days from December 21.There are several stages of ‘Chillai Kalan’. Chillai Khurd means ‘short winter’ is 20 days old. Chillai Khurd continues from January 30 to February 18. Then comes Chillai Bachcha, the ‘Baby Cold’, which lasts for ten days from February 19 to February 28. Usually the intensity of winter in Kashmir increases between December 21 and January 29. Today the temperature is just below zero degrees in most parts of Kashmir.
