New Delhi: A toxic gas leaked from a factory in Punjab’s Ludhiana. At least nine people were killed in the accident. Another 11 people are sick. Locals fear the death toll could rise.
According to local sources, on Sunday morning, toxic gas started emitting from a factory on Suya Road in Sherpur Chowk area of Giaspura in Ludhiana. As soon as the poisonous gas spread around, the locals started breathing. In all, 20 people reportedly fell ill. Nine of them have died. The remaining 11 were admitted to a local hospital. Several children were among the dead.According to local sources, the toxic gas leaked from the cooling system of a dairy factory at 7.15 am on Sunday. Locals started feeling sick as the gas spread around the factory. Several lost consciousness. There were several children among them. The local police administration rushed to the area after receiving the information. The National Disaster Response Force was also informed. A team from NDRF has also reached the spot.
The NDRF and police are still cordoning off a large area around the factory. In fact, the 300-meter area around the factory is still not safe. Police are trying to find out exactly how the gas accident happened. The area is being evacuated quickly.
