New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament Building in New Delhi on May 28 amid protests by 19 opposition parties. At such a time, the discussion is about Chengol. Sengol is a shaddha associated with Tamil Nadu.

Associated with this word is tradition. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the new Parliament building will be inaugurated on May 28 and ‘Chengol’ will be kept near the Speaker’s seat. In fact, Sengol is a historical symbol associated with India’s independence. Sengol was used as a symbol of transfer of power when the British declared India’s independence. Lord Mountbatten had no concrete idea how to hand over power to India. So he wanted to know about the traditions or customs to be followed to transfer power from Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru became aware of Sengol while discussing the matter with the country’s last governor general C Raja Gopalachari.
