Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama’s 88th birthday today

New Delhi: Today is the 88th birth anniversary of Tibetan cleric The Dalai Lama. The 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was born on July 6, 1935, in a peasant family in Taktsar, Amdor, northeast Tibet. Born as Hamo Dhandup, the Dalai Lama was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thuben Gyatso. But due to Chinese atrocities, the Dalai Lama had to leave Tibet and flee to India.

The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Buddhists, fled home to India in 1959 in the face of a Chinese invasion of Tibet. One of those journalists who reported the dramatic incident to the world was a Reuters journalist. March, 1959. The Dalai Lama finally arrived in India after walking through the mountainous terrain for five days, dusting the eyes of chinese soldiers in Lhasa.
