New Delhi: Amid the uproar over the Manipur issue, the Centre today introduced the Birth and Death Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha. However, due to the protests, the government did not try to pass the bill today. The opposition fears that if the bill is passed, it will lead to central interference in the state’s jurisdiction over the issue of storage of birth and death data, and the database will help the government in the formation of the National Register of Citizens (NPR).
After the implementation of the Birth and Death Act of 1969, it will be mandatory to e-register the birth records of a child. The Aadhaar number of the father and mother has been kept as an essential condition for enrolment. According to sources, this has resulted in the records of all children born in the country after the passage of the Act to be stored in the homes of the state government as well as the Centre.
