Nepal registered same-sex marriage for first time in South Asia

Kathmandu: Nepal has registered the first same-sex marriage in South Asia. Five months ago, the Supreme Court gave interim legality to such marriages. This time, a couple registered according to the law. Maya Gurung, 35, a transgender, and Surendra Pandey, a 27-year-old gay man, are the first same-sex couple in the country. It’s been almost six months since they started their family. But the registration of the marriage was stuck due to legal complications.

Sanjeev Gurung alias Pinky, president of Blue Diamond Society, an organisation for the welfare and rights of sexual minorities in Nepal, said Maya and Surendra got married in Dardi municipality in Western Nepal’s Lamjung district.
