Why was the Chief Justice excluded from the election commissioner appointment process? Supreme Court issues notice to Centre
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on the controversial Election Commissioner Appointment Bill. Why was the Chief Justice removed from the process of appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners?
The Supreme Court wants an explanation. However, the division bench of the Supreme Court has not yet stayed the law passed by the Centre.
In a landmark verdict in March last year, the Supreme Court ruled that the cabinet will no longer have the exclusive power to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. They will be appointed by a joint committee of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice.
