The Assam Assembly passed The Assam Repealing Bill 2024

Guwahati: The Assam Repealing Bill 2024 has finally been passed in the Assam Assembly. The Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act 1935 was repealed by the passage of the bill.

The Assam Assembly on Thursday passed the Compulsory Official Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill. Describing today as a “historic day”, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said the next goal of his government will be to ban polygamy. In an X post, the Chief Minister said, “This Act will now make it compulsory to register marriage with the government The legal age of marriage cannot be exceeded at 18 years and 21 years for girls and boys respectively. It will also act as a strong deterrent against teenage pregnancy and improve the overall growth of our girls,” he said. “I thank all the MLAs who pledged to support this bill and the government’s approach to prevent child marriage.
