Guwahati:Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reached out to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, urging him to facilitate the resumption of construction on the Majuli-Jorhat bridge, which has been halted since September 5, 2024.In his letter, Sarma expressed his concerns regarding the contractor, UP State Bridge Corporation Limited, citing a lack of accountability and warning that the ongoing delays could threaten the project’s success. The bridge, a crucial two-lane connection over the Brahmaputra River, plays a significant role in enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development in the region. Valued at approximately ₹650 crore, the project was awarded in August 2021 and is set to be completed by December 2025.Sarma highlighted the importance of the current dry season for construction, noting that any further delays could lead to substantial time and cost overruns. He urged Gadkari to take prompt corrective actions, including the possibility of re-tendering the project, to ensure that construction resumes and deadlines are met.The Chief Minister is hopeful for quick measures to prevent additional setbacks and keep Assam’s development initiatives on track.
