Northeast India Celebrated in Best Tourism Villages 2024 Awards

Discover the winners of the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024, with five villages from Northeast India earning national recognition for their commitment to sustainability and cultural heritage.

New Delhi:In a momentous announcement on September 27, coinciding with World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, revealed the winners of the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024. This initiative aims to highlight and promote rural tourism, showcasing the cultural and natural treasures of Indian villages.This year, five villages from Northeast India were honored for their unique contributions to tourism. Mizoram’s Sialsuk and Tripura’s Alpana Gram were recognized under the Community-Based Tourism category. For Craft-Based Tourism, Assam’s Sualkuchi and Meghalaya’s Umden took the spotlight. Additionally, Andro of Manipur and Mawphlang in Meghalaya were acknowledged in the Heritage-Based Tourism category.The Best Tourism Villages initiative, launched in 2023, seeks to identify and celebrate villages that exemplify sustainability and community engagement while preserving their cultural heritage. In its inaugural edition, the competition received applications from 795 villages. The 2024 edition saw an increase, with 991 entries from 30 states and union territories. Ultimately, 36 villages were awarded recognition across eight categories.This recognition not only boosts the profile of these villages but also underscores the importance of sustainable tourism practices. The Ministry aims to promote these destinations as key players in India’s rich cultural tapestry, inviting travelers to experience the vibrant heritage and natural beauty of rural India.As the initiative continues to evolve, it promises to further support local economies and encourage sustainable tourism development throughout the country.
