Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on wildlife smuggling, Chirang police apprehended 34-year-old Taijuddin Sheikh for allegedly trafficking illegal animal body parts. The arrest occurred in Ballimari, within the jurisdiction of the Panbari Police Station.
During a raid on Sheikh’s home, officers discovered two tiger teeth and a set of deer antlers, underscoring the persistent issue of wildlife trafficking in the area. Law enforcement is stepping up efforts to address the illegal wildlife trade, which endangers numerous species and disrupts local ecosystems.
Sheikh has been charged under the Wildlife Protection Act, and investigations are underway to identify any broader networks involved in the illegal wildlife trade. Police are calling on the community to report any suspicious wildlife-related activities to help safeguard the region’s natural heritage.
This incident follows an earlier bust in May 2024, when the Assam Forest Department, in conjunction with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and local police, dismantled a smuggling ring in Assam’s Sonitpur district. During that operation, suspected rhino poacher Hanif Ali was arrested, and various animal parts, including a rhino horn, were recovered. Divisional Forest Officer B. Piraisoodan noted that two additional poachers escaped, prompting a manhunt for their capture.
