Amid rising concerns over campus conduct, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma mandates stricter rules for university hostels, prohibiting former students from gathering, to safeguard student discipline and parental trust.

Guwahati: In response to escalating issues surrounding student conduct at universities, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced new regulations aimed at improving discipline in hostels. This move follows a series of disturbances, particularly highlighted during recent elections at Dibrugarh University.

Addressing the situation, Sarma stated, “Effective immediately, former students will no longer be permitted to congregate or linger within university hostels.” He criticized the casual activities occurring in these spaces, which he believes compromise the serious educational environment that institutions should foster.

The Chief Minister emphasized the vital role parents play in entrusting their children to universities, with the expectation that they will not only receive an education but also learn to be responsible citizens. “Parents expect their children to grow and thrive in a safe environment, free from negative influences,” he noted.

Sarma pointed to specific incidents at Dibrugarh University as evidence of a broader decline in discipline, highlighting the troubling trend of former students entering hostels at inappropriate hours. “This behavior cannot continue,” he asserted.

In a call to action for university administrators, Sarma urged Vice Chancellors to uphold the integrity of campus life. “It is crucial that we honor the trust parents place in us. We must ensure that our hostels are safe, disciplined, and conducive to learning,” he remarked. He expressed confidence that students may not appreciate these measures now, but would recognize their importance in the future.
