Researchers at Assam Agricultural University have introduced two new high-yield mustard greens, “Kajali” and “Laika,” along with a chilli variety, “Prabali,” aiming to enhance productivity and economic prospects for local farmers.

Guwahati:In a groundbreaking advancement for agriculture in Assam, researchers at Assam Agricultural University (AAU) have unveiled two high-yielding varieties of mustard greens—“Kajali” and “Laika”—as well as a new chilli variety named “Prabali.” This initiative is poised to revolutionize farming practices during the rabi season, providing local farmers with essential tools to increase productivity and improve their economic standing.Developed by the University’s Department of Horticulture after five years of rigorous research, these new varieties address the persistent challenges that Assamese farmers have faced. Traditional mustard greens, a vital part of Assamese cuisine, have historically suffered from limited yields, which have adversely affected local food supply and dietary diversity. The introduction of “Kajali” and “Laika” aims to counteract these issues by offering enhanced yield potential and resilience, thereby fulfilling both cultural and nutritional needs.The innovative mustard greens are expected to allow for two crop cycles within an 85-90 day timeframe, yielding approximately 400-450 quintals per hectare. The “Laika” variety is particularly noteworthy for its deep green color, elongated leaves, and authentic Assamese flavor. In contrast, “Kajali” features a distinct blackish hue that inspired its name, while also maintaining similar desirable characteristics.In addition, the new “Prabali” chilli variety promises not only a spicy kick but also substantial productivity, with an anticipated yield of around 120-130 quintals per hectare. Both the mustard greens and chilli varieties are rich in nutrients, enhancing the availability of healthy vegetables and contributing to a more balanced Assamese diet.The launch of these high-yield varieties is expected to create significant commercial opportunities for farmers, enabling them to meet the growing market demand for mustard greens and chillies.
