Guwahati: The Rabha community in Assam is set to launch a democratic movement seeking Sixth Schedule status for the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council. Tankeswar Rabha, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Council, voiced the community’s concerns in an interview, highlighting the threat posed by illegal immigration to the indigenous population in Goalpara district. He urged the BJP-led government to recognize their demand before the 2026 Assembly elections, warning that neglecting this issue could affect the party’s electoral standing in the region’s four Assembly seats.Established in 1995, the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council aims to promote the development of the Rabha community. The call for Sixth Schedule status has intensified over the years, as this provision in the Indian Constitution allows for greater autonomy and self-governance in tribal areas of northeastern states. The Rabha community believes that such recognition is vital for preserving their cultural identity and fostering sustainable development.Recently, a significant meeting took place in Magurmari, Kokrajhar, involving the Sixth Schedule Council demand committee, the All Rabha Students Union, the All Rabha Women Council, and various local leaders. As momentum builds for their cause, a large rally is planned at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 25, where community members and supporters will gather to amplify their demand for Sixth Schedule status. This movement represents a crucial step for the Rabha community in their quest for greater rights and recognition in Assam.
