Guwahati:In the wake of a jailbreak incident at Morigaon District Jail, two wardens, Tapan Bhuyan and Anup Malakar, have been suspended for their alleged negligence, which contributed to the escape of five inmates. This decision follows an investigative report by the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, highlighting serious security lapses on the night of the incident.The jailbreak occurred in the early hours of October 11, coinciding with Durga Puja celebrations. The inmates managed to escape by using blankets and bed sheets to scale the 20-foot walls after dismantling the iron bars of their cells, taking advantage of the festive atmosphere to carry out their escape.The situation escalated when Abdul Rashid, one of the escapees, was found dead in a pond in Lahorighat on October 14. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death to determine if it was accidental or the result of foul play. The other four escapees—Saifuddin, Jiarul Islam, Nur Islam, and Mafidul—are still at large, prompting an extensive police manhunt.The jailbreak has led to a series of disciplinary actions aimed at addressing security flaws within the facility. On the same day as the escape, Morigaon District Jail Jailer Prasanta Saikia was suspended, while Assistant Jailer Nabadeep Lekharu was transferred to Nagaon Special Jail. Additionally, Jail Superintendent Manas Das has been reassigned to Hamren Jail.In response to the incident, the District Commissioner of Morigaon has initiated a magisterial inquiry, appointing Additional District Magistrate Pallavi Kachary to lead the investigation. Her report is anticipated soon and will be crucial for implementing security reforms to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
