Mass Food Poisoning Strikes 200 Attendees at Memorial Event in Assam

Over 200 people fall ill after consuming snacks at a memorial ceremony in Assam’s Golaghat district, prompting health interventions and investigations into food safety.

Guwahati: In a troubling incident, more than 200 individuals became ill due to food poisoning during a memorial event in Pasghoria village, located in Assam’s Golaghat district. The gathering was held in honor of Pradip Gogoi’s late mother.Guests were served traditional snacks known as ‘jalpan,’ which include puffed rice and cream. Shortly after consumption, attendees began experiencing severe symptoms such as stomach cramps, headaches, vomiting, and diarrhea.Emergency services acted swiftly, admitting 53 individuals to community health centers in Sarupathar and Uriamghat for treatment. Two patients required advanced care and were transferred to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. Fortunately, the remaining 150 individuals who reported milder symptoms were sent home for monitoring.Local BJP MLA Biswajit Phukan visited the affected individuals and confirmed that the condition of most patients is stable, with many being discharged after receiving necessary care. He noted that the district administration has arranged for a food inspector to investigate the source of the food poisoning. Additionally, a medical camp has been established in the village, and health teams are visiting the homes of those who attended the event to ensure their well-being. So far, no serious symptoms have been reported among the attendees.
