Guwahati:Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his support on Saturday for three Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates—Nihar Ranjan Das, Diganta Ghatowar, and Diplu Ranjan Sarma—who will contest in the upcoming by-elections for the Dholai (SC), Behali, and Samaguri assembly constituencies, respectively. These by-elections are slated for November 13, 2024.The BJP Central Election Committee announced the candidates in New Delhi, marking a pivotal moment for the party as it gears up for elections that could impact its political presence in the state. Nihar Ranjan Das will run for the Dholai constituency, while Diganta Ghatowar has been nominated for Behali. Diplu Ranjan Sarma will represent the party in the Samaguri constituency.In addition to these constituencies, by-polls will also occur in Bongaigaon, Sidli, and Dholai, with vote counting set for November 23. Key dates include the deadline for filing nominations on October 25, scrutiny on October 28, and the option to withdraw nominations by October 30.These by-elections follow the recent election of several sitting legislators to the Lok Sabha during the general elections earlier this year. Notable transitions include BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya, who secured the Cachar Lok Sabha seat, and Ranjit Dutta from Behali, who won the Tezpur parliamentary seat. Additionally, veteran AGP leader Phani Bhushan Choudhury, who has held the Bongaigaon constituency since 1985, was elected to the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat. Congress’s Rakibul Hussain, a five-time MLA from Samaguri, also achieved a significant victory in Dhubri.
