Guwahati:Assam is making significant strides in its power sector, as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the state now ensures a reliable 24/7 electricity supply for both urban and rural areas. This transformation is the result of consistent investments aimed at enhancing the power infrastructure.According to Sarma, rural communities in Assam now enjoy more than 22 hours of electricity each day, while urban regions benefit from over 23 hours. These advancements underline the government’s commitment to providing dependable power to its residents and effectively managing previous supply shortfalls. In September, the Assam Government, through the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL), addressed common misconceptions surrounding smart meters. The government emphasized the advantages of smart prepaid meters, which contribute to energy conservation and cost efficiency. Contrary to popular belief, the introduction of smart meters has not resulted in increased electricity bills. Many users have reported up to a 50% decrease in energy consumption compared to their previous postpaid usage.Additionally, the smart meter system simplifies the recharging process, offers an emergency credit of ₹300, and allows consumers to pay old bills in manageable daily installments. This initiative aims to promote transparency and empower consumers, making the electricity system more user-friendly and efficient. With these measures, Assam is paving the way for a robust power supply framework that meets the needs of its growing population.
