Guwahati: A nomination rally for Tanzil Hussain, the son of Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, turned chaotic in Samaguri on October 24, leading to clashes between supporters of the Congress and the BJP. The rally aimed to rally support for Tanzil’s candidacy, but quickly devolved into disorder.Eyewitnesses reported that the situation escalated when Rakibul Hussain emerged from his vehicle to speak to the crowd. This prompted a surge of supporters from both parties towards him, resulting in a tense standoff characterized by shouting and physical confrontations. Police were called in to restore order.Prior to this event, on October 22, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi had joined Tanzil Hussain in another rally in Samaguri, preparing for the upcoming by-elections. If victorious in the November 13 polls, Tanzil could become the youngest MLA in Assam, a significant achievement for the party.On October 20, the Indian National Congress announced candidates for by-elections in five constituencies across Assam. Tanzil Hussain will contest from Samaguri, a seat once held by his father. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, Rakibul Hussain secured his seat with a notable margin of over 10 lakh votes.The upcoming assembly by-elections will occur in Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri, all of which were vacated following the Lok Sabha elections. Alongside Tanzil, the Congress has nominated Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha for Dholai, Sanjib Warle for Sidli, and Brajenjit Sinha for Bongaigaon.
