The Tawang International Marathon, featuring 4,500 participants, was flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu, celebrating peace and unity at high altitude.
Guwahati: The Tawang International Marathon commenced today, officially flagged off by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and GOC of Gajraj Corps Lt Gen Gambhir Singh. Known as the “Queen of High-Altitude Runs,” this year’s event attracted an impressive 4,500 runners from across India and beyond, taking place near the Indo-Tibet border at an elevation of 10,000 feet.This marathon, a symbol of resilience and spirit, is a joint initiative by the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government, showcasing their effective civil-military collaboration. The theme for this edition, “Peace & Unity,” aligns with the marathon’s broader mission to promote harmony in the region.This marks the second edition of the marathon, strategically timed to coincide with United Nations Day, commemorating the UN’s founding on October 24, 1945. Following the success of the inaugural marathon in 2023, Chief Minister Khandu announced on July 4 that the event would become an annual international fixture. To support over 5,000 participants across various categories—including full and half marathons, as well as shorter runs—he allocated a grant of Rs 2 crore.With a total prize pool exceeding Rs 60 lakh, the Tawang Marathon continues to grow in popularity, with its official website registering over 4,500 participants since its launch on July 10.
