A coordinated operation by Military Intelligence and Assam Police led to the arrest of significant operatives linked to ULFA (I) in Upper Assam, disrupting insurgent communications and logistics.

Guwahati: In a significant counterinsurgency operation, a joint task force comprising Military Intelligence and the Assam Police successfully apprehended several overground workers (OGWs) associated with the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), commonly known as ULFA (I). This operation took place on October 25, primarily in the Upper Assam districts of Charaideo and Dibrugarh. The operation was initiated based on precise intelligence reports indicating the existence of a network of individuals who were in close contact with senior ULFA (I) commanders. Specifically, operatives were believed to be communicating with prominent leaders SS Brigadier Arunodoy Dahotia and SS Brigadier Ganesh Lahon through secure messaging apps like WhatsApp. This intelligence led to a swift and strategic mobilization of joint forces aimed at dismantling the communication channels and logistical support that bolster ULFA (I)’s activities.Simultaneous raids were executed in identified hotspots, leading to the capture of key figures in the ULFA (I) support network. In Charaideo district, forces apprehended Prem Newar, identified as a vital link to Brigadier Ganesh Lahon. His arrest is regarded as a major setback for ULFA (I), as he allegedly played a critical role in facilitating both communication and logistics for the insurgent group.Additionally, in Dibrugarh’s Chabua area, the joint team detained Ujjal Gohain, known as Socrates, and Shashanka Rajkhowa. Gohain, the son of the late Hem Chandra Gohain, along with Rajkhowa, son of Keshab Rajkhowa, are both considered active OGWs for ULFA (I). Their detention is expected to provide valuable information regarding the organization’s recruitment strategies and operational plans in Upper Assam.Authorities are determined to continue their efforts to dismantle the remaining networks that support ULFA (I), emphasizing the operation’s crucial role in broader counterinsurgency measures. Officials have highlighted the necessity of eradicating insurgent influence to foster long-term peace and stability in the region. As security agencies ramp up their initiatives, the impact of this operation is anticipated to resonate significantly in the fight against insurgency in Assam.
