Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita disputes Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s assertions of BJP’s diminishing influence in Assam, emphasizing the party’s electoral strength ahead of upcoming by-elections.
Guwahati: Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita has firmly challenged Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s claims regarding the BJP’s alleged waning power in Assam, particularly in light of the impending by-elections. During a press conference, Margherita questioned Gogoi’s assertions that the BJP’s decline began in Jorhat during the last Lok Sabha elections, stating, “Who is the Prime Minister of India—Rahul Gandhi-Robert Vadra or the mass leader Narendra Modi?”
Margherita highlighted the BJP’s significant electoral dominance, noting that the party won 11 Lok Sabha seats compared to Congress’s three in the previous election cycle. He further emphasized the BJP’s lead in assembly segments, asking rhetorically, “Which is bigger, 94 or 29?”—referring to the segments where the NDA was victorious versus those led by Congress.
Gogoi had previously predicted that the upcoming by-elections in the Behali constituency would mark the beginning of further losses for the BJP. In a personal retort, Margherita remarked on Gogoi’s recent visits to rural Assam, suggesting that his travels abroad might undermine his credibility.
With the by-elections set for November 13, which will determine the future of five assembly seats, Margherita expressed confidence in the BJP’s prospects, having recently attended campaign meetings in Behali with Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika. To maintain a governing majority in Assam, a party needs 64 seats in the 126-member assembly. The BJP-led alliance showcased its strength in the last Lok Sabha elections, leading in 94 assembly segments while Congress managed around 30.
